Announcements for February 26th, 2021

We would like to recognize the following scholars this month for showing the virtue of citizenship.

1A Sienna Brown

1C Jacob Black

1D Micah Rodriguez

Literature
We have completed the novel, Sam the Minuteman. The students LOVED it! They should be able to tell you all about it!

March 8th every student will need a copy of My Father's Dragon. If you do not have a copy of the book, you may purchase a copy for your scholar here!

Poetry

March 1st we will be starting a new poem Wynken, Blynken and Nod by Eugene Field. We will recite the poem the week of March 29th.

Science

We are finishing our section on animal/plant parts and how humans mimic those parts in the tools we create. We will be taking a section test on Wednesday, March 17th, so look out for a student study guide in your scholar's homework folder.

We will be diving into senses after this section! This will be fun for your scholars, I can sense it!

History

Next week we will be reviewing Early Civilizations.

We then begin a new unit when we return from Spring Break.

Math

Our first-grade math scholars will be reviewing Unit 13 “Numbers to 40.” We will be reviewing counting on and back from 40, comparing and ordering numbers to 40, making 10, more than, less than, tens and ones, adding and subtracting one and two-digit numbers with and without renaming. They will take a test at the end of the week. Once we come back to school from Spring Break we will begin studying Unit 14 which teaches the concept of multiplication by recognizing equal groups and the number of equal groups to solve problems such as: “3 groups of five make 15 altogether.” Please continue to support your scholar memorizing their math facts. Thank you.

We hope that you had fun on your unexpected snow days! Thank you to the parents of Grey Egbert for sending us this great photo!

Announcements for the week of February, 22nd 2021

Science
We are wrapping up our first section about the parts of plants and animals and how those parts help them survive.

History
We will be learning about how religions helped people in early civilizations, and how the Maya creation story was passed down from one generation to the next.

Math
This week our first-grade mathematicians will learn that adding three numbers can be done in a step-by-step manner, involving the addition of the first two numbers, then using the answer to add to the third number. Pictures will first be used to demonstrate how this is done. They will also be shown that no matter what the order of the numbers within the addition sentence, the answer will be remain the same. Our scholars will also learn to count by 2’s through repeated addition. They will also learn to count by 2’s forward and backward. After next week we will be doing a review week before learning about the concept of multiplication. Please continue to help your student learn their math facts using flash cards.

Literature
We are continuing to read Sam the Minuteman and will be finishing the book next week.

Books are at the core of a classical, liberal arts education. At Great Hearts Academies, it has always been the tradition for students to develop a personal library of books that they mark in, keep and return to during their time at Great Hearts and which they will be able to treasure for years to come. We call these books “Classics to Keep”. We utilize these classics throughout the school year. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to purchase these books for their own personal collections, so that they can write in them and keep them-allowing students to develop their own impressive personal library of classics over the course of their academic career with Great Hearts. Due to the pandemic, we are unable to share books. Please ensure that your scholar brings their own copy so that they may follow along in class!

Every week a homework tracker is sent home and on the backside is a reading log. These reading logs MUST be filled out and returned by Friday as they are graded weekly. Students should be reading a grade appropriate book to an adult. The adult should write down the title of the book, the pages the student read and a comment about their reading. The adult should ask the student questions about that they read. This will help improve their overall reading skills.

Announcements for February, 5th 2021

Literature
We have been reading Sam the Minuteman and the students are enjoying it immensely! We have been looking at vocabulary words that go along with the reading for that day. Students get very excited when they spot one of the vocabulary words. We will continue to read Sam the Minuteman next week! If your scholar has not brought their book to school please send it with them as they will need it every day.

Science
This week we've been observing animals and identifying their parts and how those parts help them survive. Plants and their parts are next on our agenda. We will discover more about them through our observations and interactions.

History
We are still on Early Civilizations of America. We will be finishing this unit next week.

Math
This next week our scholars will continue working with addition and subtraction of 1-digit and 2-digit numbers using strategies such as the “count on, count back, make 10, and two subtract from 10 strategies. First-grade scholars should be memorizing math fact families to 20 for rapid, accurate recall while working out addition and subtraction problems. This will set them up for success in solving math problems second grade through high school.

Other Announcements
Labeled water bottles are needed every day.

Scholars are invited to make Friendship cards to share this next week on Friendship day at school.
