Announcements for November 13th, 2020

Poetry

We are learning 'Thanksgiving Day' by Leanne Guenther. The Poetry Recitation will be on November, 20th. We have had very little time to practice in class, so please practice at home.

 History

We will be taking a quiz on Tuesday on the chapters we have read thus far. To prepare, we will be playing a game of bingo on Monday.

Science

In science, we will also be taking a quiz on the chapters we have explored thus far on Thursday.  To prepare, we will review on Wednesday with a word search.

Literature

I hope you are enjoying the Fables we have been learning.

Next week will be our last Fable, “The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg.”

On Friday, we will be creating an egg craft.

Here are the items you will need:

Black Construction paper

Tissue Paper

Glue

Scissors

After our Fables are completed, we will be reviewing Owl and Home!

I am super excited to explore this book in more detail.

Math

This week in math our scholars will wrap up our unit on numbers to 20 and take a quiz and cumulative test on Units 1-6. Our team encourages all our students to continue memorizing their math facts from 1-20 for speed and accuracy when completing math problems. We begin our unit on common shapes whereby the scholars will learn to recognize and name the four basic shapes: circle, triangle, rectangle and square. We will be using 2- and 3-dimensional shapes to identify their attributes such as size, shape, color and faces of these objects and group them according to their attributes. Students will be guided to deduce and describe salient features such as the number of corners and sides of the four basic shapes. The students will learn to form patterns to help identify the attributes of the shapes to form the pattern and manner in which the shapes are repeated in the pattern. By the end of the unit the scholars will have achieved knowledge of the features of the basic shapes which will help them learn how to fit together pieces to form required shapes. In January, our first grade scholars will be creating a 3-dimensional object with basic shapes for their scholar’s special project. More information to come!

Announcements for the Week of November 9th

Literature

We will be discussing the Fable, “The Fox and the Grapes.” I hope you have been enjoying the Fables and the lesson that each of them teach.

No additional items are needed to be purchased for the crafts this week.

Math

This week our math scholars will learn to add by making 10 first. Picture cutouts will be used to demonstrate this method to the students. Number bonds are then used to show the symbolic form of addition and help students transit to adding without visual aids.

Similarly with subtraction, the scholars will first be taught to group objects in ones and tens before performing the act of taking away the desired number of objects during subtraction. They will learn to count the remaining objects to find the answer to the subtraction problem. Number bonds are also used to display the symbolic form of subtraction and show that the “taking away” can take place to the ten or the ones.

Students will also review the useful tool of counting on or counting back when adding or subtracting 1, 2, or 3. Once they are familiar with the number sequences within 20, they should be able to count on or count back with ease. Parents, please continue to work with your first-graders on recalling addition and subtraction facts within 20. Thank you!

 History

We are continuing with Ancient Egypt. We will be reading Chapters 5 and 6 of our Readers (Gods and Goddesses/Egyptian writing.  The students will get a chance to learn more about ancient civilizations and how writing affected their everyday life. Students will also be able to write their names in hieroglyphics

Science

We will start documenting the sunrise and sunset for one whole week. At the end of that week, we will learn how to use that data to graph and show how daylight moves through the hours of the day as the seasons

change.

Poetry

We have started our new poem, 'Thanksgiving Day' by Leanne Guenther! The recitation will happen on Nov. 11th.

Other Announcements

Please remember to send water bottles to school with your students as they need them at recess and throughout the day. Our water fountains are not being used due to Covid-19 restrictions to keep our students as safe as possible.

Sweaters, jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and backpacks should all be labeled with child’s name and grade.

This month of November we are working on the virtue of honesty, a virtue we discussed while reading “A Bargain for Frances.” We talk about this important virtue many times throughout the school week. Honesty is the best practice, even when we have to admit to making a poor choice. When we are honest we are taking responsibility for our actions and people are more likely to trust us.

Have a Wonderful Summer!!!
