Math
First grade has now completed Unit 7, “Shapes” and will complete Unit 8-“Length” and Unit 9-“Weight” next week. After each lesson on Tuesday through Friday, the scholars will take a quiz involving the lesson taught that day. These introductory chapters on length and weight are short. The scholars will be measuring length and weight of items found in the classroom using non-standard units. For example, they will use a “pencil” to measure the length of their desk and say: “My desk is 6 units long.” A unit equals 1 pencil. They will be introduced to a balance which we will weigh everyday objects using non-standard units. For example, they will use “paper clips” to weigh a pair of student scissors and say: “A small pair of scissors weighs 16 units.” A unit equals one paper clip. It will be a fun week comparing lengths and weights and measuring and weighing a number of items found in the classroom.
Science
In science, we will be starting our subunit on the moon. You can prep your scholar by starting discussions about what they notice when they see the moon. We will be discussing features of the moon and the pattern and direction the moon travels in.
History
This week we will be ending our unit in Ancient Egypt with a review and test. You should receive a parent review guide in hopes to facilitate some fun discussion over the weekend. Here is a quick outline History Parent Review Guide. On Tuesday, the students will play a game of Jeopardy and Wednesday will be their test.
Poetry
Everyone is enjoying our poem, "There Once Was a Puffin" by Florence Page Jacques. Keep practicing! The recitation will be on January 14th, 2021.
Literature
We are re-visiting Owl at Home to go more in depth in the story.
This week we will discuss Owl at Home (Strange Bumps).
When we return from December break, we will be reading Sam the Minute Man.
Other Announcements
We have had several first-grade scholars forgetting to bring their homework folders (containing their homework) to school in the morning. Please check to make sure they take responsibility to put their homework folders with their homework back in their backpacks as soon as they are finished with their homework. Thank you for your support!
